美国纽约市的一栋公寓的狗老大麦克，以为是他的主人凯蒂的心肝宝贝和生活重心，但是当凯蒂带回一只身都是杂乱长毛的杂种狗杜老大之后，他养尊处优的汪星人生活就彻底瓦解。杜老大好不容易逃离流浪动物之家，很高兴有一个家，以为能与麦克和平共处，但是麦克可不这么想，一心想死守住他的地盘。当这对从一开始就不对盘的狗兄狗弟流落在纽约市的街头时，他们必须抛开对彼此的成见，同心协力对抗一只奸诈狡猾的小白兔小白，打败小白兔招集的弃养宠物大军“宠物革命咖”，然后在晚餐开饭之前回到主人身边。他们最后也达成了，并且都各自找到自己的生存意义。
